Singing Crickets Slowed Down Sound Like A Boys Quoir

Composer Jim Wilson has recorded the sound of crickets and then slowed down the recording, revealing something so amazing. The crickets sound like they are singing the most angelic chorus in perfect harmony. Though it sounds like human voices, everything you hear in the recording is the crickets themselves.
The recording contains two tracks played at the same time: The first is the natural sound of crickets played at regular speed, and the second is the slowed down version of crickets’ voices (along with the pitch adjusted).

Giraffe Manor

Giraffe Manor is one of Nairobi’s most iconic historical buildings dating back to the 1930s and is reminiscent of the early days of Europeans in East Africa. Whilst the building itself resonates with the past, very much present is the herd of resident Rothschild giraffe who tend to visit the Manor in the mornings and evenings to greet guests and sniff out some snacks before venturing out into their sanctuary of 140 acres. From 1974, Giraffe Manor was the home of Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, whose lifelong ambition became the preservation of this beautiful and threatened species of giraffe.

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders Album Cover Shoot & Samples

November 9th marked the 20th(!) anniversary of the release of A Tribe Called Quest‘s Midnight Marauders. The third in the trilogy of classic LPs that kicked off ATCQ’s recording career – after 1990′s People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm and 1991′s The Low End Theory  MM also possesses one of the most iconic album covers in hip-hop history. Featuring the group’s signature striped female figure amidst the floating, headphone-clad heads of dozens of hip-hop luminaries spread over three different (red, black and green bordered) incarnations, Midnight Marauders‘ unforgettable cover design was the creative brainchild of Jive Records head art director Jean Kelly with assistance from fellow art director Nick Gamma. This, after the ambitious original cover concepts from Quest leader Q-Tip were abandoned.

Creating Lifelike Images of American Streets Using Model Cars and Forced Perspective

For nearly 25 years Michael Smith has been working on a fictional town he refers to as Elgin Park, where all of his miniature scenes take place. To make each shot he positions an old card table at scenic points around Boston and positions his minutely detailed cars and model sets on top. Using an inexpensive point-and-shoot camera and natural light he then snaps away, simply eye-balling the perspective to get everything right.

These are his most recent photos, earlier shots from the collection have gone into a book titled Elgin Park: An Ideal American Town.

Read Anthony Hopkins’ Letter to Cast & Crew Of Breaking Bad

Dear Mister Cranston.
I wanted to write you this email – so I am contacting you through Jeremy Barber – I take it we are both represented by UTA . Great agency.
I’ve just finished a marathon of watching “BREAKING BAD” – from episode one of the First Season – to the last eight episodes of the Sixth Season. (I downloaded the last season on AMAZON) A total of two weeks (addictive) viewing.
I have never watched anything like it. Brilliant!
Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen – ever.
I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I’ve sort of lost belief in anything really.
But this work of yours is spectacular – absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers…. every department – casting etc. managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome.
From what started as a black comedy, descended into a labyrinth of blood, destruction and hell. It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian or Greek Tragedy.
If you ever get a chance to – would you pass on my admiration to everyone – Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, R.J. Mitte, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Steven Michael Quezada – everyone – everyone gave master classes of performance … The list is endless.
Thank you. That kind of work/artistry is rare, and when, once in a while, it occurs, as in this epic work, it restores confidence.
You and all the cast are the best actors I’ve ever seen.
That may sound like a good lung full of smoke blowing. But it is not. It’s almost midnight out here in Malibu, and I felt compelled to write this email.
Congratulations and my deepest respect. You are truly a great, great actor.
Best regards
Tony Hopkins.

For The Record

Some kiwis have undertaken an expedition to discover, learn, meet and document the ideas and people behind the controls of vinyl record production. Recorded over 6 weeks, traveling through Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the UK.
For The Record exposes a number of notions about why vinyl is such an indelible medium and how it continues to remain popular in the the face of opposing format change.

Old New York Talks About New, New York.

Not too long ago, it looked like New York's glory days as a center for dance music had passed. As the birthplace of disco and hip-hop and the home of legendary nightclubs like the Paradise Garage, Limelight and Twilo, the city has long been part of the cultural fabric. But as the notoriously grimy city of the late 20th century transformed into the sleek and hyper-gentrified metropolis of today, its thriving underground lost its foothold.

New Yorkers have long flourished under adversity, though, and its now bustling party scene is a testament to this. Promoters, producers and DJs jumped the East River to establish Brooklyn as a new creative center. Lofts and warehouses filled the void left by Manhattan's shuttered nightclubs, and a new generation of producers is infusing the city's musical legacy with the sounds of the international scene. But the luxury condos rising along the waterfront are a constant reminder that the city's relentless evolution could easily stamp things out again. We burrowed deep for our latest Real Scenes film, discovering how some of the key players in this vast scene are hustling hard to make it last.
Fuck. I want to live there so bad.

What We Learned From The Breaking Bad Finale

The Badfinger is still playing, Jesse is still hollering, and, on the chilly floor of a Nazi meth lab, Walt's body is still warm. Not nearly enough time has passed to revisit Sunday's Breaking Bad finale in full. My thoughts on that remain more or less as they were in the wee hours of Monday morning: A show that prided itself on exacting precision ended with an episode as buffed, polished, and perfect as the inside of that TAG Heuer Walt left atop a gas station pay phone. To some, that was ideal. To others, it was idealized. I have a feeling that the argument — like the one raging in Flynn's head every morning between the fluffy savoriness of eggs and the sweet surrender of pancakes — will never end.

Which immediately sets it apart from Breaking Bad. The show is over. Life — and television — must somehow soldier on. Below are some thoughts on the three pressing issues left in the finale's wake.

Want To Control Cockroaches With Your Smartphone?

Next month, Backyard Brains will begin selling the Bluetooth RoboRoach, the first cyborg to be commercially available to the general public. Priced at $99.99, the product is cheap and simple to use. Evidence's (Small) Vinyl Collection

.5 of Dilated Peoples features on the latest installment of Crate Diggers.

On a related note, below is Ev's 10 Track Commandments, via Scratch Magazine Aug '06.

- If you’re sampling vinyl always do a super low cut to eliminate the rumble form the needle. This allows you to eventually turn the sample up louder.
- When sampling, get a loud signal into your MPC. The louder you sample in, the less gaining you will have to do later, but don’t distort your sample.
- Don’t rely on looking at the wave samples to truncate. Close your eyes and use your ears. When you think you’ve done your best then take a peak at the waves and see how close you were.
- Use as little effects as possible. You can always add more later when you mix. The more reverb you use, the less it slaps you in the face.
- When programming drums don’t rely on quantizing. If something feels more natural a little offbeat, chances are it is.
- Don’t be afraid to sample at a lower sample rate. This can color your track and give an amazing feel.
- Step editing allows you to nudge any instrument without having to go back and tape it in by hitting the pads.
- Time stretching allows you to change the tempo of the sample or drum without changing the pitch.
- Make sure your drums are locked in the way you want them before you start making a bunch of sequences.
- If you do all these steps you will have a good sound coming straight out of two tracks. When you mix, make sure your engineer has heard what it sounds like coming straight out of your box.
