The Overview Effect [documentary]

On the 40th anniversary of the famous ‘Blue Marble’ photograph taken of Earth from space, Planetary Collective presents a short film documenting astronauts’ life-changing stories of seeing the Earth from the outside – a perspective-altering experience often described as the Overview Effect.

The Overview Effect, first described by author Frank White in 1987, is an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

Dumb Prisoner Gets Stuck In His Own Escape Hole

Andy Dufresne he is not. Apparently this guy, and three other inmates tried to escape through a hole made on their cell's wall using a metal pipe from the Brazilian prison's shower block. Unfortunately for them, they were as smart as a bag of hammers: the hole was too small and the second prisoner got stuck, keeping the others inside.

Incapable of moving in or out, the police caught him in the act. According to the news report, after badly injuring himself trying to pass through the hole repeatedly, the prisoner realized it was an impossible proposition. That's when he began to scream and cry for help. At that moment, the guards came in and discovered the surrealistic scene. They even took photos of him as they waited for the fire department.

According to prison officials, this convict escaped last year too. That time he was captured on the same day. Here's hoping third time is a charm.

What The World Eats

Here are some pics taken from the book 'Hungry Planet: What the World Eats' by Peter Menzel.

The book observes what the six billion of us eat for dinner each week, while making the point that "at a time when hundreds of millions of people don't have enough to eat, hundreds of millions more are eating too much and are overweight or obese".

The above image is from Italy. More pics after the jump.

Japan's Tunnel of Lights

'Winter Illuminations 2012-2013' is now on at Nabana no Sato - a botanical garden turned light theme park on the island of Nagashima in Kuwana.
Millions of sparkling LED lights placed all over the vast grounds including on the water and in the gardens creates the amazing sences, which includes a beautiful sunrise inspired by Mt. Fuji at dawn, a rainbow across the sky, and even an aurora. The stars of the show are the famous walk-through tunnels of light that completely envelop the viewer, making it seem as if they're walking through bright, magical portals. As Joanna Tocher of Wide Island View said, "if you can shut out the noise of the hundreds of people around you it really does feel like you’re stepping into another world." After losing all eight of their preseason games and slumping to a 1-4 record, the Lakers have now lost their coach, Mike Brown. Making The Shining

Making The Shining is a short, fascinating documentary from Stanley Kubrick‘s daughter, Vivian, who was only 17 when she was given access to shoot behind the scenes of her father’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s ghost story for the BBC TV show Arena.

What she captures is at times compelling: a suddenly emotional Scatman Crothers reflecting on his career, a stressed-out yet honest Shelley Duvall, who admits her insecurities as an actress and is seen being scolded by an intimidating Kubrick, in what appears to be an attempt to coax a better performance out of Duvall.

On the flipside, star Jack Nicholson is his facetious self, filmed here displaying a devilish sense of humor (and commitment to dental hygiene), joking for the camera in between playing a psycho hellbent on murdering his family.

Photograph The Wreckage of Fukushima

Photographer Donald Weber, traveled to the Fukushima buffer zone, to capture this haunting little mini-documentary. The results of the trip are about what you'd think, except about twice as haunting. There are post-apocalyptic scenes of empty streets, eeriely abandonded houses, and even a corpse. Given the recent admission that the whole thing was avoidable, it's interesting —and depressing— to take a look at what the aftermath looks like.

The 100-meter men’s final at the 1988 Seoul Games was the fastest and perhaps most thrilling sprint in Olympic history. Talib Kweli's Favourite 25 Verses

1. RAKIM, FOLLOW THE LEADER, VERSE ONE- ERIC B. AND RAKIM

Follow me into a solo
Get in the flow - and you can picture like a photo
Music mixed mellow maintains to make
Melodies for MC’s motivates the breaks
I’m everlastin, I can go on for days and days
With rhyme displays that engrave deep as X-rays
I can take a phrase that’s rarely heard, FLIP IT
Now it’s a daily word
I can get iller than ‘Nam, a killin bomb
But no alarm - Rakim will remain calm
Self-esteem make me super superb and supreme
But for a microphone still I fiend
This was a tape I wasn’t supposed to break
I was supposed to wait, but let’s motivate
I want to see who can keep followin and swallowin
Takin the making, bitin it and borrowin
Brothers tried and others died to get the formula
But I’ma let ya sweat - you still ain’t warm
You a step away from frozen, stiff as if ya posin
Dig into my brain as the rhyme gets chosen
So follow me and were ya thinkin’ you were first?
Let’s travel at magnificent speeds around the Universe
What could ya say as the Earth gets further and further away
Planets are small as balls of clay
Astray into the Milky Way - world’s outasight
Far as the eye can see - not even a satellite
Now stop and turn around and look
As ya stare in the darkness, ya knowledge is took!
So keep starin soon ya suddenly see a star
You better follow it cause it’s the R
This is a lesson if ya guessin and if ya borrowin
Hurry hurry step right up and keep followin
