Mike Mondays: Love From Mike

Above is a copy of a love note Mike penned to a broad named Laquette while sitting in his high school chemistry class (insert lame science pun here). Some Jordan stan would go onto buy the letter years later at an auction for US $5,100.66.

The Exact Date Of Ice Cubes Good Day

A chap named Donovan got his Inspector Gadget on and pin pointed the date that Ice Cube had his 'Good Day'. The evidence is below.

CLUE 1:
"Went to short dogs house, they was watching Yo MTV Raps"

Yo MTV RAPS first aired on Aug 6th 1988

CLUE 2:
Ice Cubes single "Today Was A Good Day" released on Feb 23 1993

CLUE 3:
"The Lakers beat the Super Sonics"

Dates between Yo MTV Raps air date (AUGUST 6 1988) and the release of the single (FEBRUARY 23 1993) where the Lakers beat the Super Sonics:
Nov 11 1988    114-103

Nov 30 1988    110-106
Apr    4 1989    115-97
Apr  23 1989    121-117
Jan  17 1990    100-90
Feb  28 1990    112-107
Mar  25 1990    116-94
Apr  17  1990    102-101
Jan  18  1991    105-96
Mar  24  1991    113-96
Apr  21  1991    103-100
Jan  20  1992    116-110

CLUE 4:
"No barking from the dogs, no smog"
Dates of those Laker wins over SuperSonics where it was a clear day with no smog:

Nov 30 1988
Apr   4  1989
Jan 18  1991
Jan 20  1992

CLUE 5:
"Got a beep from Kim, and she can fuck all night"

Beepers weren’t adopted by mobile phone companies until the 1990s. Dates left where mobile beepers were availible to public:

Jan 18 1991
Jan 20 1992

CLUE 6:
Ice Cube starred in the film 'Boyz In The Hood' that released late Summer of 1991, but was being filmed mid-late 1990 early 1991 and Ice Cube was busy on set filming the movie Jan 18 1991...far too busy to be lounging around the streets playing bones yellin domino.
Therefore, the ONLY day where:
- Yo MTV Raps was on air
- It was a clear and smogless day
- Beepers were commercially sold
- Lakers beat the SuperSonics
- and Ice Cube had no events to attend was…

Star Wars Uncut

Shot Phila

Back in 2009 some dude named Casey Pugh asked thousands of Internet nerds users to recreate scenes from "Star Wars: A New Hope", 15 seconds at a time. After all the segments were finished, they were put together to recreate the entire movie. This is that film.

I can't say I've watched much of it (not being much of a Star Wars stan and all) but I do appreciate the concept behind it.

10 Years After Ether

Documenting the COMPLETE Nas Vs. Jay-Z Battle

via planetill

Ten years ago this month, Nas established the gold standard for diss records with “Ether,” the ultimate punctuation to the greatest Hip-Hop battle of all time. In today’s era of Twitter beefs, rap stars like Drake seem more willing to diss Kevin Hart on wax than they are to respond to shots fired by Ludacris. At times, it can be easy to forget what a real Hip-Hop battle looks like. “Ether” was an effort so devastating in its execution that the name itself simultaneously became a verb immediately upon its release. No one ever claims to have “Bridge is Overed” somebody or spit “Jack the Ripper” at an adversary. Nor has any rapper boasted about being “Takeover” or “Long Kiss Goodnight” than their competition. This distinction belongs to “Ether” alone.

One of the many reasons “Ether” remains so iconic is the mythology that surrounds it. As epic as the Nas vs. Jay-Z battle remains, very little has been accurately reported about exactly what led to their historic clash and the “Ether” atomic bomb that ended it in Hiroshima fashion. The following is a comprehensive look at the “Ether” timeline and everything on wax that led to its inception.

Mos Dick

Via The Vine

One year ago, acclaimed American hip-hop artist Dante Smith – stage name Mos Def (pictured) – was set to tour Australia for the first time. Eleven shows were booked, including headline festival appearances at Soundscape in Hobart and The Hot Barbeque in Melbourne. After failing to appear at his first scheduled performance in Adelaide, he went on to randomly skip four shows of the itinerary. Such was the ensuing confusion, that following the postponements, cancellations and sternly-worded press releases from the promoter, Peace Music, became something of a sport here at TheVine. For background, revisit our news story ‘Mos Def gone missing on Australian tour’. (I’m pleased to note that he made it to Brisbane for his Australia Day show, which was actually pretty great.)

What did those four cancellations mean for Peace Music, though? The promoters were awfully quiet for the remainder of the year, which posed the question: "Did the Mos Def debacle put an end to their live music interests?". In late 2011, I contacted the company’s managing director, Sam Speaight, requesting an interview about the logistics of touring American hip-hop artists in Australia. “I’d love to do this,” he replied via email. “So often promoters are dragged into the street and shot (proverbially speaking) by the ticket-buying public over hip-hop artists’ cancellations and their childlike antics. Few people understand that, in many cases, the promoters have driven themselves to the brink of sanity and financial ruin to avoid an artist cancelling.”

A couple of days later, we connected via Skype. “The total chaos that seems to govern most of all the management side of these artists’ careers is just dumbfounding,” Sam told me from his new pad in London. “If people knew what went on behind the scenes, if nothing else, it would be a spectacle worth reading about.” He’s not wrong...

Bungee Jumper Falls Into Crocodile-Infested Waters

This video shows 22-year-old Australian tourist Erin Langworthy bungee jumping from the Victoria falls bridge, 364 feet (111 meters) over the Zambesi River. Just a normal tourist video until the cord breaks and she falls into the crocodile-infested waters (cause that's what you want to bungee over?!)... Miraculously, she survived after hurting herself quite badly and swimming out of the river rapids with her legs still tied. Fun!

Talking to 9news, Erin described her ordeal:
It went black straight away and I felt like I'd been slapped all over. The water was going quite quickly and then I started to hear the roaring. It's like being in waves, you get sucked under and then you pop up so it's very disorienting, I didn't know which was up or down.
It gets worse:
It was quite scary because a couple of times the rope actually got caught on some rocks or debris. I actually had to swim down and yank the bungee cord out of whatever it was caught on to make it to the surface.
Fortunately, she survived the crash, the crocodiles and the rapids with just a fractured collar bone, massive bruises and a great story to tell to her future kids. What an Aussie battler.
