American Customer Service

It's not until you go overseas that you realise how bad our customer service in New Zealand really is. Like how I've had this running battle with a shitty little retail store in Ponsonby for the past week, when every time I try and get it sussed they manage to fall themselves to be unhelpful. This video gives me hope that I might just get what I asked and paid for, eventually. Hopefully. Holding breath.

Kenyan Orphanage Reenacts Larry Bird’s Famous '87 Steal Against The Pistons

This is the best fundraising video ever. A group of Kenyan orphans have recreated the famous scene from Game 5 of the 1987 NBA Eastern Conference finals where "There's a steal by Bird!" on the in-bounds play, who then passes it "underneath to DJ" to score the game winning shot. So dope!

Splatter Portraits

Chinese artist, Chen Yingjie, has a very unique style of street art. He often explores new ways to combine Western graffiti styles with traditional Chinese methods and elements including ink painting, drum rhythms and a variety of cultural symbols. Below are some more of his ‘splatter’ portraits which are pretty, pretty, pretty good © Larry David. Seriously.

The Longest Word In English Takes Over 3 Hours To Pronounce

The longest word in English uses 189,819 letters to name the chemical titin - the worlds largest known protein. Sorry about the narrator growing a decent beard throughout this video and the suspicious cut around the 2 hour mark where the flower just drops dead...but the word is listed on wikipedia, so it has to be real.

What The World Eats

Here are some pics taken from the book 'Hungry Planet: What the World Eats' by Peter Menzel.

The book observes what the six billion of us eat for dinner each week, while making the point that "at a time when hundreds of millions of people don't have enough to eat, hundreds of millions more are eating too much and are overweight or obese".

The above image is from Italy. More pics after the jump.

Do More Chinups
Don't think about pulling yourself up when you do chinups. Instead, imagine pulling your elbows down. The exercise will seem easier.

Build Better Abs
Don't work your abdominal muscles every day. "Physiologically, your abs are like any other muscle in your body," says David Pearson, Ph.D., C.S.C.S., an exercise scientist at Ball State University. Train them only 2 or 3 days a week.

Protect Your Neck
Put your tongue on the roof of your mouth when you do crunches. "It will help align your head properly, which helps reduce neck strain," says Michael Mejia, C.S.C.S., Men's Health exercise advisor.

Johnny From 'The Room' Has A Soundboard

The character, director, writer and producer of the worst movie ever made has a soundboard. Use it to make prank calls, drop quotes into DJ sets, or (like most soundboards) play with it for 15seconds then ignore it for the rest of your life.

It's called a Kalimba and RZA should sample it. While it's much cooler than a ukulele, it's probably just as hard to play a standard European hand piano.

Japan's Tunnel of Lights

'Winter Illuminations 2012-2013' is now on at Nabana no Sato - a botanical garden turned light theme park on the island of Nagashima in Kuwana.
Millions of sparkling LED lights placed all over the vast grounds including on the water and in the gardens creates the amazing sences, which includes a beautiful sunrise inspired by Mt. Fuji at dawn, a rainbow across the sky, and even an aurora. The stars of the show are the famous walk-through tunnels of light that completely envelop the viewer, making it seem as if they're walking through bright, magical portals. As Joanna Tocher of Wide Island View said, "if you can shut out the noise of the hundreds of people around you it really does feel like you’re stepping into another world." Below are some photos taken in year's past of the gorgeous light tunnels as well as on the grounds.

That's A Look That'll Get A Coach Fired

After losing all eight of their preseason games and slumping to a 1-4 record, the Lakers have now lost their coach, Mike Brown. A little harsh I would have thought with a team still learning a new 'Princeton' offence, injuries to Steve Nash, juggling an idiot centre and being only 5 games (5!) into a 82 game season. Kobe though, forever the nice guy, has got nothing but Facebook love for Brown.
