30 For 30 Sole Man

Sonny Vaccaro is one of the sports world's most charismatic, polarizing and influential figures. Now 75, he is still a fast-talking maverick whose zeal for basketball, advocacy for underprivileged kids, and instinct for sales forged an era of unprecedented growth for two pillars of pop culture: basketball and sneakers.

It was Vaccaro who advised agents during the ABA-NBA wars of the 1970s, who launched Nike's "Air Jordan" empire in the 1980s, and who ushered in the professionalization of youth basketball in the 1990s, when players such as Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady, both of whom signed shoe deals brokered by Vaccaro, turned high school games into auditions for the NBA.

"Sole Man" is a definitive, first-hand and unflinching account of how Vaccaro rose from humble Pennsylvania steel town roots to become the most valuable marketing asset in the $13 billion athletic shoe industry. Vaccaro's personal arc mirrors the narrative of basketball's ascent over the last 40 years. It is an era in which James Naismith's creation morphed from a regional game tainted by segregation and gambling into a global enterprise that stretches from Brooklyn to Beijing. And to a staggering degree, the basketball community is really just Six Degrees of Sonny.

Derrick Rose Is Sort Of Hunting For Lebron James

Prior to clicking play though, realize the video is fan made and the voice heard is John Harrison from Star Trek: Into The Darkness. Derrick Rose nor adidas had no part whatsoever in the video. But still. I'm a Lebron hater from way back, so anything anti him is getting play here.
Also, keep this in mind for next NBA season; Rose returns, Brooklyn enlists the geriatric coalition of Garnett, Pierce and Terry and Indiana lock in David West while adding bench support. Objectively, this means Miami advancing to a fourth straight Finals next year (which hasn’t happened since the Celtics of the ’80s) will be more difficult than its ever been.

The James-Pierce Rivalry

When LeBron James played his first game against Carmelo Anthony, the home opener in his rookie season in 2003, the Cleveland Plain Dealer ran a boxing-style promotional poster with the tag “Rivalry begins tonight!”

By 2005, every time James and Dwyane Wade played against each other, the game was ticketed for national television.

The desire to create a genuine duel between James and Kobe Bryant led Nike to create a series of commercials in which the puppet version of each would trash talking each other. Even if the men themselves showed little interest in doing it for real on the court.

For various reasons, these attempts to generate a rivalry for James failed. But he does have a less-publicized but legitimate rival, in a fierce competition that has been nurtured organically through postseason battles and periods of authentic dislike, genuine bad blood and some hard-won respect.

When the Eastern Conference finals open tonight, James will play his 19th career playoff game against Boston Celtics future Hall of Famer Paul Pierce. For the 19th time they will likely be each other’s primary defender. For the 19th time there’s probably going to be some hard stares, complaints to the officials about the other and perhaps even a few borderline dirty plays...

What Was In LeBron’s Tiny Purse?

“On Sunday morning, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade walked through Staples Center and proceeded to shake up the interwebs with another joint fashion statement. Yes, Wade’s outfit was abnormal for the standard NBA player (white pants, spray-on copper shirt, big purse) but at this point, that’s par for the course for the Dade County Diva. What stole the show, however, was his 6-foot-8 man-child teammate, who was carrying around a bag the size of a cannoli. “Much was made about LeBron’s latest fashion decision, and many speculated about what he lugged around in that leather Ziploc.

Some of my guesses:
— A single, monogrammed Q-tip
— A set of jacks
— A full facial set
— Loose mayonnaise
— An even smaller bag
— 3 quarters and no rings
“Unfortunately, because Captain and Tennille LeBron and Wade are such easy targets for all of the hate, the beauty in their fashion decisions is often lost in the shuffle.”

Highly embar, for everyone involved.

Points of interest; Shane Battier rocking the triple polo, Dwayne Wade dressed like a maƮtre d' on a cruise ship, Chris Bosh brushing off his elbows and Lebron's forehead.
